WhatsApp down: Messaging app out of action across the world

Chaos is among us all.
Why? WhatsApp is down. We repeat – WhatsApp. Is. Down.
Nigerians and people from all over the globe have reported not being able to use the hugely popular app.
The app went offline at around 9pm with thousands quickly taking to social media to discuss the outage.
It was unclear what had caused the problems on Wednesday evening or when WhatsApp would be back up and running.
Users are currently being faced with the ‘timer of doom’ when they attempt to send a message – and at the top of the app it just says ‘connecting’.
Many posted memes and jokes on Twitter about how the world would be coping with the loss of the app.

Update: See The Amount The Second Woman Was Stopped From Jumping Into Lagos Lagoon Is Owing As She Finally Speaks

The Lagos State Police has released an official statement, disclosing why the lady who was rescued today from jumping into the Lagos Lagoon by 11:25a.m wanted to do it.
The statement reads;
“Shortly after the report of Mrs. Abigael Ogunyinka who was rescued by fishermen in Lagos Lagoon early Friday morning, another woman was today prevented at about 11:25 a.m from leaping into the Lagoon by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos state Police Command.
“The lady, Taiwo Momoh, 58, a textile dealer in Lagos Island, had put off her shoes and was wrapping her dress around her when men of RRS 226 prevented her from jumping.
The lady, who lives in Lekki Lagos, disclosed that she was pushed to committing suicide in order to put an end to her constant sleeplessness and shame occasioned by her indebtedness to three Swiss textile dealers.
“She noted that her problem started sometimes in 2015, when a Bureau De Change dealer carted away her N18.7 million she wanted to change to pay her foreign creditors.
“Her condition she said became compounded when robbers invaded her shop in Lagos Island carting away most of the textiles that was left with her.
“She emphasized that most of the time, she has been having sleepless nights and seeing the ghosts of the creditors whenever she was alone.
“Momoh, a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God disclosed that on several occasions she had attempted to see her Parish Pastor to identify with her problem and for the church to help her raise money to meet her Swiss Creditors in order to assure them that she would pay their money.
“She noted that she was only allowed to see the second in command, which has yielded no fruits.
“Added to all these, my first son, whom I felt would stand by me and console me abandoned me. By the time I’m gone, maybe he would come around and inherit what is left.
“I don’t want to use my debt and death to disturb anybody. I was in the shop this morning. I have looked everywhere and estimated what is there.
“I think, with my house, a bungalow, those I am leaving behind can still live comfortably. I want to go and meet God. This world is empty.
“I won’t because I want to get rich join cult group. I go my way and I don’t socialize unnecessarily.
“I was a Muslim, I have because of this problem been jumping from one faith to the other. The problem is too much for me to bear. I want to go back to God.
“That is why I have dressed very simply. I am ready to meet HIM.
If He cannot address my problem on earth, let me go back to Him.”

We Lost Hope Returning Back Home – Chibok Girls Tell Buhari

One of the 21 freed Chibok girls on Wednesday told President Muhammadu Buhari that while in Boko Haram captivity, they never believed that they could regain freedom.

Tolu Ogunlesi, head of digital communications for the presidency, made this known in a tweet shortly after the girls met with President Buhari.

According to Ogunlesi, the girls who had spent two and half years as captives of Boko Haram were full of joy when received by the president.

During the meeting which held at the presidential villa, Ogunlesi said the girls sang the Nigerian anthem louder than everyone present.

“We didn’t know we would come back to be a part of Nigeria, but the grace of God made it possible”, one of the girls was quoted to have said.

“We don’t have anything to say again, only thank you”, said another girl.

Following the meeting, Buhari promised the 21 girls that they would enjoy the best of life, having survived the worst.

“Expect More Chibok Girls To Be Released Very Soon” – Lai Mohammed Says

The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians of a further release of a larger batch of Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram sect two years ago.

Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, has expressed optimism that a bigger batch of Chibok girls will soon be released.

However, he warned analysts and commentators to be careful of the comments they make so that the release of the remaining girls will not be jeopardised, The Cable reports.

Speaking on Sunday in Abuja at a special thanksgiving service for the 21 released Chibok girls, the minister said “reckless analysts and commentators” were not helping the situation for the other girls still in the captivity.

Mohammed said those who doubted the Buhari’s administration to ensure the safe release and the reunion of the abducted Chibok girls with their parents were disappointed.

“They are many reckless analysts and commentators who are not helping the situation. We still have many of our children in captivity. Therefore we have to be careful with the kind of comments that we make. We must not make comments that will make the release of these girls difficult or impossible,” he said.

“When the President said that the Boko Haram saga will not be closed until all the girls abducted have been released and reunited with their families safely, those who doubted did not believe us so we thank God this day has come.”

While appealing to the other parents whose children have not been released, Mohammed said: “This is the beginning and we are very optimistic that very soon another batch bigger than this will be released. I want to assure you that these negotiations are ongoing even as we speak.”

Also speaking, Yakubu Nkeki, chairman of the parents of the abducted Chibok girls, dismissed reports alleging that 18 of the 21 freed girls were pregnant.

He thanked the president for summoning the courage and the political will that eventually led to the release of the abducted girls, and appealed to the general populace to stop spreading rumours, particularly on the social media, that would put the lives of the other girls at risk.

You Have No Shame, And You Are The Cause Of Corruption In Nigeria – Fayose Blast Obasanjo

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has blamed the current spate of corruption in Nigeria on former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.

The fiery governor who used to be in close affinity with the former President but strained relationship after accusing the elder statesman of attempting to impeach him in 2006, described Obasanjo as a laughing stock.

In an interview with the Punch, the governor alleged that Obasanjo bribed lawmakers with N50m each for his failed third term bid.

Wondering if the former President has shame, Fayose alleged that the frequency with which Obasanjo visits the villa, shows that he is trying to “cover up something at all cost.”
Part of the interview reads, “That is if he is ready to make up with me.

“I’m not ready to take issues with Obasanjo because if you are talking about corruption today, Obasanjo is the cause. (What about) the N50m Obasanjo (allegedly) gave each lawmaker for his failed third term agenda?

“I was an Obasanjo boy. Obasanjo can’t be celebrated as a saint in Nigeria. When he talks, I just shake my head. Sometimes, when he goes to the [presidential] Villa, I wonder if he has shame at all. When he was [the president], Buhari was not visiting him regularly. Obasanjo is behaving like somebody who wants to cover [up] something at all cost.

“I want a former president that will know this nation does not belong to one man. Most of the problems in this country were caused by Obasanjo. The impeachment of a governor by four lawmakers was done during Obasanjo’s tenure as a president. Tell me where the moral is.

“We should not deceive ourselves. The fact that he is supporting the government of the day tactically is to protect himself. Sometimes, I ask if he is looking for a political appointment. Have you seen Ernest Shonekan and other former presidents visit Buhari like he does? He is becoming a laughing stock. That is the way I see it.”

Meanwhile, the fiery governor had stated that only a mad man will want to join the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Buhari/wife interview: Joke Taken Way Too far – Okorocha Laments

Apparently perturbed by the different shades of interpretations negatively trailing the recent press interviews by President Muhammadu Buhari and his wife, Aisha, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has said the public reaction was a joke taken too far.

Says Aisha Buhari didn’t mean to bring her husband’s govt down

It will be recalled that the wife of the President last week granted a press interview to Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Cooperation, BBC, where she demanded a rejig of the cabinet, threatening that if nothing was done to better the lot of many impoverished Nigerians, she might not join her husband in the 2019 campaign trails should he decide to run for a second term in office.

But speaking with State House Correspondents, yesterday, in Abuja, Gov. Okorocha, who was present during the conference in Germany having accompanied the President on the visit, said the public had completely misconstrued the statement.

The governor who is also the chairman of ruling All progressives Congress, APC Governors Forum, stated that it would be wrong to believe that the intention of Mrs. Buhari was to pull down her husband’s government.
Okorocha stressed that both the President and his wife were having a nice time together.

He said: “What is now trending in the social media, the comment of Mr. President on the interview of his wife, I was there when Mr. President made the comment. I think both the interview and the comment were taken out of context. I can understand why the international community speaks on this matter because of human rights and all that is going on around the whole world.

“I tend to believe that Nigerians should understand this matter because I do not think those were the intentions as being described on social media and those condemning the act. I can put it this way, that it is a joke taken too far outside the shores of Nigeria.

“If you have been with the person of the President and where he cracks jokes, you will understand with me that it could be his style of jokes because even when he was responding, he was smiling. I don’t think the meaning that is given to it is what it is.
“If not, why would he have his five daughters having Masters and Ph.Ds and his wife educated and putting women in key positions in the country? I don’t think it is.

“Aisha Buhari who granted the interview didn’t give that interview to bring down her husband’s government. She was only trying to make peace among perceived aggrieved members in the polity. I have situations where my wife joins Commissioners and my workers to condemn what I do.

That does not mean she is fighting me. She is rather a bridge of peace between me and them.”

You Belong To My Kitchen, So Stay Away From Politics – Buhari Insists

President Muhammadu Buhari has again re-echoed his earlier stance that his wife belongs in his kitchen.
Buhari while responding to his wife, Mrs Aisha Buhari’s criticism of his government, on Friday said she “belongs to my kitchen” and other rooms.
But the President’s media aide, Garba Shehu immediately reacted to his principal’s comment which has drawn so much criticism saying Buhari was joking.
However, the President in an interview with DW’s Phil Gayle in Germany maintained his earlier stance, saying the function of his wife was to take care of his home.

Excerpt of his interview in part…

DW: Recently your wife criticised your choices for top jobs, and you responded by saying
“I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room.”
What did you mean by that, sir?

Buhari: I am sure you have a house. … You know where your kitchen is, you know where your living room is, and I believe your wife looks after all of that, even if she is working.

DW: That is your wife’s function?

Buhari: Yes, to look after me.

DW: And she should stay out of politics?

Buhari: I think so

Boko Haram Sets FG On Conditions If They Want Remaining Chibok Girls Released | See Details

Indications have emerged that Boko Haram insurgents have given the Federal Government some conditions for the release of more Chibok girls.

A source with details of the negotiation says unlike the release of the 21 girls last Thursday, the release of the remaining girls will be strictly based on the swap of about 16 of the group’s Commanders held in detention and payment of ransom.

Out Of the 219 Chibok girls still missing, only 104 were left as the rest had been married off to top commanders of the sect and converted to Islam, Vanguard reports.
The report claimed that the Islamic group will insist on an upfront payment of huge cash by government before freeing the captives.

According to the source, “The truth is that those Chibok girls are now Boko Haram members, having married the sect members and become radicalised.
“The remaining 83 girls are with a top leader of Boko Haram and those are the only ones we are going to work for their release in the next phase of our negotiations which starts immediately.

“The others had since become Boko Haram members, having been married off and radicalised into Boko Haram as soon as they were captured over two years ago.
“I think the guys are settled on the idea that the cash must come ahead of the release since they had proved to government that they are reliable by releasing the 21 girls, last week, without many conditions attached.”

This revelation is coming at a time when President Muhammadu Buhari expressed optimism that more of the abducted Chibokgirls will be released.

You Are Possessed – Fani-Kayode To Buhari

Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has said President Buhari is possessed by ”strange and powerful entities,” adding that the President needs prayer.

Fani-Kayode, who was reacting to Buhari’s comment on his wife’s inerview on the BBC, stated this on Friday in a Facebook post.
It will be recalled that Aisha Buhari had said people who did not share the vision of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), were now appointed to top posts because of the influence of certain people.

Asked to comment on his wife’s statement, Buhari laughed off the comments and said: “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room, and the other room.”

Fani-Kayode, PDP, Presidential campaign chairman in the 2015 General elections, said; “When our President can get up and tell the whole world all the way from distant Germany that his wife “belongs to the kitchen, the living room and the other room” simply because she dared to speak her mind to the BBC then you know that he is in the grip of something evil and that demons are speaking through him.
“It is all part of the spiritual dimension of living in the Villa that Abati was referring to in his essay, he noted.

“The President’s mind has become twisted and he is now posessed by strange and powerful entities. Any man that can say that about his wife can kill his children. He needs a lot of prayer,” Fani-Kayode added.

Don't Expect Much From Me At The Next Election Unless…’ – Aisha Buhari Warns Her Husband

Presisdent Buhari’s wife has warned him that she may not back him at the next election unless he shakes up his government.

In a BBC interview, Aisha Buhari said the president “does not know” most of the top officials he has appointed.
She suggested the government had been hijacked, saying a “few people” were behind presidential appointments.

Mr Buhari was elected last year with a promise to tackle corruption and nepotism in government.
His wife’s decision to go public with her concerns will shock many people, but it shows the level of discontent with the president’s leadership, says the BBC’s Naziru Mikailu in the capital, Abuja.

The president famously remarked at his inauguration that he “belongs to nobody and belongs to everybody”.
In the interview with Naziru Mikailu, Mrs Buhari said: “The president does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years.”

She said people who did not share the vision of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were now appointed to top posts because of the influence a “few people” wield.

“Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.”
Asked to name those who had hijacked the government, she refused, saying: “You will know them if you watch television.”

On whether the president was in charge, she said: “That is left for the people to decide.”
Mrs Buhari said her husband had not told her whether he would contest the 2019 election.

“He is yet to tell me but I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again.”

Asked what she regarded as the government’s major achievement, she said it was to improve security in the north-east where militant Islamist group Boko Haram has waged an insurgency since 2009.

“No-one is complaining about being attacked in their own homes. Thankfully everyone can walk around freely, go to places of worship, etc. Even kids in Maiduguri have returned to schools,” Mrs Buhari said, referring to the city which was once the headquarters of the militant group.

Jigawa Passes ‘No HIV Test, No Marriage’ Bill Into Law

Jigawa State House of Assembly has passed a bill which makes it mandatory for all intending couples to undergo test for HIV/AIDs, twice, in the last three months, before marriage is contracted.

Making this known at yesterday’s plenary, Chairman of the Committee on the control of HIV/AIDs, Ibrahim Suleman Gwiwa,

noted that the bill intended to provide free and compulsory HIV/AID test before marriage, as well prohibit all forms of discrimination and stigmatisation against people living with the virus.
Gwiwa said the bill became imperative following the widespread of the killer disease among couples in the state.

He explained that in the bill, Sharia and Magistrate Courts would have jurisdiction to try HIV/AIDs related offences and added that, on the other hand, Association for People living with HIV/AIDs and State Agency for the Control of AIDs would be deployed for enforcement at all levels.
“Intending couples should submit themselves together to the same facility and the result should be open to them by the counsellor at the same time.

“Tests should be done twice, three months and two weeks to the marriage and the bill indicates that Shariah and Magistrate Courts in the state have jurisdiction to try offences under the law.”

Presidency To BBC Hausa,- Do Not Broadcast Aisha Buhari’s Revealing Interview

The BBC Hausa Service is under intense pressure from President Buhari and members of his cabinet not to air the recent interview granted by his wife, Aisha Buhari, which is due for broadcast on Saturday, according to Sahara Reporters.

Buhari is said to have reached out to his wife, who is currently in London, to stop granting further interviews to the media.

In excerpts that have been widely reported in the media, Mrs. Buhari is quoted as saying that the President had ditched those who really worked for his victory in the 2015 election and is instead focusing on those that didn’t participate.

The First Lady also said the President did not know a majority of his ministers before appointing them to office and expressed her concern that certain individuals are creating division within the party.

“What I am afraid for them is the rebellion of 15 million people,” says Mrs. Buhari at the end of the excerpt available to the public.

You Wont Go Scot-Free – EFCC To Patience Jonathan

A group, the Human Rights Defenders and Advocacy Centre, HRDAC, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to change its name and slogan from ‘Nobody is above the law’, since its could not probe and prosecute Patience Jonathan the wife of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

This came as the EFCC said that ‘Patience Jonathan will never go scot-free if she is found wanting or any other person no matter how highly placed he or she is.’

EFCC boss Magu and Patience Jonathan The group in a statement, on Wednesday, title, ‘Demand for arrest, prosecution of Patience Jonathan, probe of APC campaign fund and no more sacred cow in the anti-corruption crusade’ signed by Queen Ameh, and Innocent Agbo during a protest at the EFCC office in Ikoyi, Lagos said the EFCC was selective in its anti-graft war, as its also questioned why Patience Jonathan was still walking freely in spite of the evidence the EFCC said its has against her.

”You have found evidence incriminating Patience Jonathan but we are surprised that Patience Jonathan is still allowed to be walking freely, and even had the audacity to take the EFCC to court to demand the release of her money to her.”

The group also said the EFCC should change its slogan from ‘Nobody is above the law’, since it had found it difficult not to only go after Patience, but the likes of ex-Presidents, including Ibrahim Babangida, Abdusalam Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

Agbo during the protest lamented that “I have been to this same EFCC to bail several people over the issue of N500,000 passing through their accounts innocently. They were invited, they came voluntarily and you people held them.
But we have somebody with our money, $15m which is N6bn, walking freely. On Ibrahim Babangida, Abdusalam Abubakar, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

Agbo said ‘we have the issue of Badamasi Babangida; it is open knowledge that N12bn gulf money was missing under his regime, nothing is done; we are aware of Obasanjo and the $16bn power funds, you people are not investigating it; we are aware of the petition against Amaechi to the EFCC; we are aware that the APC did not get the funds for its election campaign from only Buhari’s account.

We are aware that you are probing the Peoples Democratic Party, why are you not probing the APC?” he questioned The EFCC Deputy Director of Operations, Mr. Iliyasu Kwarbai, speaking with the protesters vowed that if its investigation uncovers evidence of corruption against the wife of former president Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, she would not be left off the hook and that ‘Nobody is above the law’, “Let me tell you, there is no sacred cow; anybody who is found wanting, who involves himself or herself in corrupt practices will not be spared.

I have received your petition, it is here and what do we do? We go into investigation immediately.
Now we have seen the name of Patience Jonathan; it is here. If she is found wanting, she will never go scot-free.

So also any other person no matter how highly placed he is. “We must sanitise our country and provide a very good environment that people can come and invest in; an economy that is devoid of any economic and financial crime.

So, we are happy to see you here; we have received it and we are going to go into action. I am going to inform my chairman that you were here and that we’ll commence investigation immediately.”
